Nags Head Real Estate Listings

One of the first tourist destinations in the United States, the town of Nags Head has a long history of welcoming visitors. It began when a plantation owner built a family vacation cottage in the 1830s in order to escape the heat inland. The distinctive Nags Head-style cottage originated in the late 1800s and is characterized by porches wrapped around to the east and south and protective shutters that could be propped up to enjoy coastal breezes. This distinctive style is still seen today in modern Outer Banks architecture. Nags Head has a substantial residential area bordering the Roanoke Sound. Additionally, there are a number of hotels, motels and Outer Banks vacation homes lining the oceanfront. This is a popular beach town, offering more beaches than any other locality with abundant public access points and parking. Nags Head is home to the largest sand dune on the east coast, Jockey’s Ridge State Park, which has spectacular water views and is popular for hiking, kite flying and hang gliding. There are three piers available for fishing, Nags Heading Fishing Pier, Jennette’s Pier and the Outer Banks Fishing Pier. The Nags Head Links is a par 71 links style course available to the public which offers dramatic vistas of the sound and the Atlantic.
